What is W-Hat?

W-Hat is a group in Second Life for members of the Something Awful Forums. It was created on April 27th, 2004, to get away from the bad reputation of the original SA Goons group. W-Hat is for people who actually want to play the game, not people who want to grief and get themselves banned.

For the people who actually want to get a good Goon community going and actually not have members banned every hour then join the new group ill make soon. This group will have a Headquarters bought by me and I want to make it a fun time.

-- Akaikami

W-Hat is a well known Something Awful goon group situated in Second Life's Baku sim, which is essentially their own private sim. There, they engage in something that baffles the administrators of the game and strikes fear in other residents' hearts: fun.

-- N3X15 (PN)

A former griefing group that was around long before PN, all W-Hat does anymore is roleplay at their little camp in Baku "what" sim (which they pay $600/month for, with Intlib's help) and fap to yiff porn. They have SUPER SRS CONNECTIONS to IntBlubber and Prokofy, as well as other "prominent" SL furfags. Most of the original goons have left and ironically, been replaced by furfags. They are Intlib's poster child for reformed griefers, as in massive faggots that are begging for some form of rape.

What does W-Hat mean?

Emot-w-hat

W-hat or :w-hat: came shortly after the "what" craze in FYAD/GBS. The image was at first a clever way of saying "what" and later a way of saying "what" without a ban... for a while.

Who do I contact about W-Hat or W-Hat services?

The W-Hat website and all services are created and maintained by masa. Choose one:

  • IM Masakazu Kojima in-world.
  • PM nex on irc.synirc.org or join #sl and ask for nex/masa.
  • Send an email to masa at this domain. (email from ANY other address is somebody else)

Who runs W-Hat?

What are the rules?

I will ban you if you break the rules. I will ban you if I don't like you. I will ban you if you if I'm playing Scrabble and I get a triple word score on a word which starts with the same letter as your username. I will ban you just to ban you.

-- SA Forum Rules circa 2001

How do I join?

Go to the terminals located at Baku (36, 181) and follow the directions on the screen.

It's fairly common knowledge that to join W-Hat you sign on as a "throw-away character," do some big "exploits" as part of the admission process, and if it works and is generally approved of, log on as a new avatar and new W-Hat member. I bet you cant even join W-Hat without being banned or warned at least once.

-- Dianne Mechanique

At SLCC I learned about the goons who are an elite group of griefers who only accept members after proving themselves for at least three months. The act of greifing becomes a sort of activst protest for them.

Where's W-Hat HQ?

what

Why can't I build?

The main parcel is for goons only. There is a sandbox on the south edge of the sim where anyone can build, or you can rent a plot (see below).

Why does my stuff keep getting returned?

It sucks.

What is the W-Hat IRC channel?

The official W-Hat channel is #sl on irc.synirc.org. It is run by Masakazu Kojima (nex) and Loksr Mysterio (Lok). It is open to the public and relayed into SL, so do not expect anything you say there to be private.

Can I sell stuff at W-Hat HQ?

Stores are not allowed on the main parcel unless they fit the theme. For ordinary stores you can rent a spot in the W-Hat Mall. The rate is L$150/wk for 50 prims. Contact Kyro Killian.

Can I get land in what?

Yes, we have some land reserved for this. The rate is L$2 per square meter per month. Contact Kyro Killian.

Can we do whatever we want on our land?

No. The Second Life rules always apply.

if you see an avatar with their lights off don't flash yor lights at them because they are goons in training and will run you off the road and crash your client

How do I put pictures on w-hat.com?

Take a snapshot using the button, choose "E-Mail postcard", and send it to pics@w-hat.com. It is open to everyone right now but if it is abused it will be restricted to W-Hat members. If you change the subject from the default, it will be treated as a list of tags separated by spaces. The message will be shown as the title/comment for the picture.

If you want to post a picture from w-hat.com on a forum or blog or something, you do not need to rehost it; you can leech it directly from w-hat.com.

I heard W-Hat did <something awful>, is it true?

W-Hat consists of over 700 active accounts and over 2,000 inactive ones. The hacked SL clients distributed in July of 2005 were created by a W-Hat member, and another member used them to steal and distribute several scripts. One of our members was the first to sell those stolen scripts as their own work, and other members have been responsible for at least two grid attacks.

The members involved in these incidents have been removed from the group, as well as from the game. We do not feel any more responsible for their actions than Linden Lab or the rest of the Second Life community does. The only thing that binds one member of our group to another is an account on an internet forum. Unless you think it would be fair to hold you responsible for what everyone else on the Second Life forums does, please do not hold W-Hat members responsible for what other people on the Something Awful forums do.

Why is everything bad that happens W-Hat's doing?

People blame everything they dislike on W-Hat, and if there isn't anything to be upset about, they make something up. The W-Hat group is hidden so there is no way for a non-member to know whether someone is a member of the group or not. Almost every complaint I have ever followed up on has turned out to involve people who aren't even in W-Hat, or even associated with the SA forums at all.

Aren't you the lady that said on the forums that W-Hat was "hunting you with push guns," and when I asked you about it it turned out: 1) They were not W-Hat members; 2) They had nothing to do with W-Hat; 3) You knew both of these things, but you said you thought they were connected to W-Hat because you "saw them at W-Hat HQ"; 4) You weren't really sure where (or whether) you had seen them or where W-Hat HQ was; 5) You weren't even on when they were at your house "hunting" you?

-- Masakazu Kojima

Well these statements are all true (if a bit slanted in their presentation).

I dont know what you mean by posting them though as they directly support the scenario I describe in the post you are replying to (thanks :)).

-- Dianne Mechanique

Why don't you remove the troublemakers?

We do. We are still blamed for everything they do, and they go on to attack W-Hat far more often than anyone or anything else. Our home sim Baku was crashed 1269 times between 2006-07-29 and 2007-08-03. That's an average of almost 4 times a day.

Why don't you start a new group?

W-Hat was supposed to be the new group. Several splinter groups have been created by people who were kicked out of W-Hat, and while they generally enjoy freedom from W-Hat's reputation (and even their own, since W-Hat is blamed for their actions), they have all eventually been shut down by Linden Lab.

What is Voted 5?

Voted 5 was a W-Hat splinter group created on February 18th, 2006 by Verbena Pennyfeather, a furry who does not read the SA forums and has never posted on them, and Plastic Duck, the legendary figurehead of all evil in Second Life. It was not associated with or controlled by W-Hat, and was actually begun on hostile terms. Both Verbena and Plastic are permanently banned from W-Hat. Since V5 was also based around the SA forums, they shared a lot of members with W-Hat, but they did not share any officers, rules, or ideals.

Why was Verbena an officer of W-Hat?

Before the V5 split, Verbena offered to let W-Hat use his sim, Satyr, while he was away in Iraq. In order for him to give the land to the group without giving up ownership, he had to be an officer of the group. A vote decided that the benefit was worth the risk, Verbena became an officer, and Satyr became a W-Hat sim. He was only an officer in spirit, and never tried to pull rank or claim authority over members.

After lying to the other officers about his association with Plastic Duck, they became worried and moved the group's land to another group for safekeeping. Verbena was asked to take his sim back and leave the group. He did so, and created Voted 5.

Should we let Verbena be an officer so that he can deed his sim (Satyr) to the group?
Group W-Hat Proposal PASSED!

-- Group Vote

What happened to Voted 5?

On September 19th, 2006, the Voted 5 group suffered the same purge that the original SA Goons group did. LL claims that 60 people were banned "in connection with the recent grid attacks," but many of them had not even logged in for months. As far as anyone can tell, LL simply banned everyone that didn't have the lowest role in the group.

Many enemies of W-Hat were banned, but most of them did not deserve it. Only innocent people were hurt by this action. The true griefers were back in the game within minutes, while some of the most talented people in SL lost years of work with no warning and no explanation. Those people, their fans, and their friends are the only ones who will suffer.

Though W-Hat was not affected, people generally name W-Hat instead of Voted 5 when referring to the event.

We do continue to be quite aggressive about banning and criminal reporting associated with grid attacks. We actually just banned around 60 accounts that were related to the grid attack that we had yesterday. So, I just wanted to pass that on. We're obviously very careful about privacy, but I do want everybody to understand: we are as aggressive as we can possibly be about shutting down accounts when there are cases where people are obviously attacking Second Life and trying to keep other people from being able to use it.

Who are the "Patriotic Nigras"?

PN is a bunch of retards from 4chan who think being annoying makes them e-cool. Most of them are 12-16 years old, watch a lot of anime, masturbate to drawings of little kids, and have parents that don't love them. They got their start in Second Life by using objects created by goons and trying to take credit for things goons did. For the most part, they've taken over W-Hat's status as the big bad scary group of evil e-terrorists in Second Life, and they will happily take the credit whenever a goon does something bad. They're easy to spot because they can't express anything without using some stupid 4chan meme.

Some delusional people believe that PN is some kind of W-Hat front group, but anyone who has actually been to W-Hat's land knows that 4chan memes are ban on sight, and most 4chan catchphrases trigger an automatic ban.

Patriotic Nigras, /b/tards all, look on the somewhat better-behaved Goon community — in particular the W-Hats, a Second Life group open only to registered Something Awful members — as a bunch of uptight sellouts. The W-Hats disavow any affiliation with the "immature" and "uncreative" Nigras other than to ruefully acknowledge them as "sort of our retarded children."
